Toyota C-HR GR Sport added to hybrid SUV range

Toyota draws inspiration from its motorsport division for new C-HR trim level

Toyota C-HR

Toyota has announced the C-HR GR Sport, a new trim level set to join the hybrid SUV's line-up in early 2021. It gets sportier styling inside and out, along with sharper steering and chassis tweaks. Prices and exact specifications haven't yet been announced, but are expected closer to the car's launch early next year.

The Toyota C-HR's powertrains are unchanged, with both the 120bhp 1.8-litre and 182bhp 2.0-litre petrol-electric hybrids offered in GR Sport guise. The model's sporty intent is signalled by stiffer suspension, larger anti-roll bars (the 1.8-litre getting the same as used in the 2.0-litre) and steering that has been "tuned for better response". The GR Sport also gets model-specific tyres, but Toyota has stopped short of confirming what these are.

The most obvious changes from a visual standpoint include blacked-out details on the C-HR's headlights, tail-lights, bumpers, side mouldings and grille, along with a larger front splitter. Sporty 19-inch alloy wheels are also fitted, while customers can choose from eight dual-tone paint finishes, including Ash Grey with a black roof, a combination exclusive to the GR Sport.

Inside, 'Cool Silver' trim is added, along with Alcantara and leather or all-cloth upholstery complete with sporty red stitching, which continues on the perforated leather steering wheel and gear selector. GR badging features throughout.

While it's not yet clear exactly where the GR Sport will sit in the C-HR range, it's safe to assume it'll be somewhere near the top. Standard equipment includes tinted rear windows, power-folding mirrors, heated front seats and LED headlights, along with the familiar Toyota Touch 2 infotainment screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone connectivity.

The GR Sport will join the Icon, Design, Excel and Dynamic specifications in the range and is likely to cost over £30,000 when it arrives in the UK. Sporty non-plug-in hybrid rivals are thin on the ground at this price point, so the GR Sport could be a unique proposition.
