New Toyota Yaris Hybrid 2020: UK prices and specs confirmed

Fourth-generation Toyota Yaris with new hybrid technology will cost from £19,910 in the UK

Toyota Yaris Hybrid

UK pricing for the new, fourth-generation Toyota Yaris has been revealed, with the 1.5-litre petrol-electric hybrid version costing from £19,910. Orders are being taken now for delivery in September.

Combined power from the engine and electric motor has been increased by 15% compared to the old Yaris Hybrid, to 114bhp. That's enough for a 0-62mph time of 9.7 seconds, while official fuel-economy and CO2 emissions figures stand at just under 69mpg and 92-98g/km respectively.

A new lithium-ion battery replaces the old car’s nickel-hydride unit. With 27% less mass, it gives the car a weight saving of 20kg, while its ability to charge and discharge more quickly results in a greater amount of running on electric power – something the car can do at speeds up to 80mph.

The exterior design has evolved on the Yaris, with Toyota aiming to add more visual appeal by giving the new car the sharper, creased look adopted by the Corolla hatchback.

Unlike most new cars, the new Yaris is shorter than before at 3,940mm, although shorter overhangs have still allowed the firm’s engineers to increase the wheelbase by 50mm. This is made possible by a switch to Toyota’s TNGA platform, which also underpins the Corolla, RAV4 and C-HR SUVs.

The new Yaris also gets a strengthened, more rigid bodyshell, a stiffer torsion beam at the rear and a faster steering rack, Toyota hopes these measures will make the supermini more engaging to drive. The changes have also allowed the manufacturer to soften the suspension in the hope of improving the ride on rougher roads.

Inside, drivers benefit from a full-colour, 10-inch head-up display, as well as a large central touchscreen and a digital dashboard behind the wheel. The Yaris offers smartphone connectivity in the form of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.

The interior features a mix of soft-touch materials and durable plastics, while the seating position has been lowered by 36mm. The rear seats are geared towards children: tall adults may find that headroom is in short supply in the back.

Trim levels and specifications

In the UK, the Yaris is available in four core trim levels: Icon, Design, Dynamic and Excel. A fifth version, the Launch Edition, will be available for a limited time as the car goes on sale.

The Yaris Icon is priced at £19,910 and in addition to the Safety Sense kit listed above, comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, a seven-inch multimedia display, a reversing camera, automatic headlights and wipers, air-conditioning, powered front windows and power-adjustable heated door mirrors.

Costing £20,970, Design adds an eight-inch multimedia display, LED headlights and rear lights, rear privacy glass, powered rear windows and the option of a panoramic roof.

Next up is Dynamic (£21,920) which ups the wheel size to 17 inches, as well as adding front sports seats, black part-synthetic leather upholstery, smart entry and push-button start, dual-zone air-conditioning, a premium JBL eight-speaker sound system and an optional bi-tone paint finish.

The regular range is topped by the Excel grade, which costs £22,220 and on top of Design's equipment haul, offers buyers front sports seats, light-coloured part-synthetic leather upholstery, smart entry and push-button start, dual-zone air conditioning, a six-speaker sound system, auto-folding door mirrors, blind-spot monitoring and the option of a panoramic sunroof.

Offered for a limited time as the car goes on sale, the Launch Edition (£24,005) maximises the specification and emphasises the car’s styling with a Tokyo Fusion Red and Eclipse Black Pearlescent two-tone paint finish. Equipment (in addition to the Dynamic specification) includes auto-folding door mirrors, blind-spot monitoring, a 10-inch colour head-up display, clear blue ambient cabin lighting and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror.
