Reinvented Ford Capri electric SUV to be revealed on July 10

Ford’s iconic coupe is making a comeback in electric coupe-SUV form

We’ve known for a while that Ford has been planning to revive its iconic Ford Capri nameplate, almost 40 years after it was initially discontinued. But based on these teaser images and some hints and clues from a retro-looking advert, the reveal of the new Ford Capri electric coupe-SUV is just days away.

Pictures of the new Capri were sent out via a retro-looking interactive advert for a business called ‘Comeback Cars’. The advert, which has appeared in a number of print publications, states that “we bring back icons to their legendary status, rewired for a new era. With 55 years of knowledge, our team has restored 1,986 classic coupes. We promise to return your car fast, back from its glory, EV-ery time.”

Fans of the original Ford Capri might notice a few references to the cult-car’s history and fastback bodystyle. The first being ‘55 years of knowledge’, the number of years since the Mk1 Capri was launched in 1969, while the ‘1,986 classic coupes’ references the year the Mk3 Capri ceased production.

At the bottom of the advert, there is a QR code prompting readers to text the phrase ‘Comeback’ via WhatsApp. If you message the company, two teaser images of the headlight signature and a sloping coupe roofline will be shared after a brief encounter with an automated virtual chatbot.

The chatbot signs off the conversation by saying “now, you know all I can give you. Almost. The legend returns on July 10.”

Aside from these two teaser images, we know the next-generation Ford Capri won’t follow the same low, two-door coupe recipe as its predecessors. Instead, it will be transformed into an electric coupe-SUV, as confirmed when we spotted it testing last year. Rival electric coupe-SUVs include BMW’s iX2, the Cupra Tavascan and the Audi Q4 e-tron

The Capri will also be closely related to its electric SUV sibling, the Ford Explorer. As the Explorer utilises the electric-only MEB platform from the Volkswagen Group, we could expect the Capri to be offered with the same selection of batteries and motors, ranging from a 52kWh battery and 168bhp motor in base models, all the way up to a 79kWh battery and 335bhp dual-motor setup in top-of-the-range cars.

Range for the 79kWh, 335bhp dual-motor Explorer is 331 miles, but the sleek, aerodynamic coupe bodystyle of the Capri could see higher official range figures, but powertrains, range and specs haven’t been confirmed.

Prices are yet to be announced, but the new Explorer starts from £45,875. When you add the coupe-SUV bodystyle and the prestige of the Capri nameplate into the mix, prices could start in the region of £48,000.
