Production-spec Tesla Roadster will be unveiled by the “end of year”, according to Elon Musk

Elon Musk has confirmed that the production version of the Tesla Roadster electric supercar will finally be unveiled later this year, with first deliveries due in 2025.

The second-generation Tesla Roadster was first unveiled all the way back in 2017, alongside the brand’s Semi truck. Since then, the zero-emissions supercar’s introduction has been continuously pushed back previously due to a long list of other projects, including the heavy focus on what has now become the world’s best-selling electric car, the Tesla Model Y.

While the original Tesla Roadster was heavily based on the petrol-powered, two-seater Lotus Elise, the new model will be based on an all-new bespoke EV platform and will instead offer a 2+2 seating configuration with a removable hardtop. 

Posting on his own social media platform, X (once known as Twitter), Elon Musk described the upcoming car, saying “[there] will never be another car like this, if you could even call it a car.”

Described on Tesla’s own website as the “quickest car in the world”, the Roadster will feature a triple-motor setup that’s pinned to get the car from 0-60mph in 1.9 seconds and onto a top speed of over 250mph. Musk has also stated that the Tesla supercar will produce as much as 10,000Nm of torque; we expect the final horsepower figure to be in excess of 1,000bhp, too.

These are all huge figures, and perhaps even more impressive is that Tesla is also claiming that the Roadster will be powered by a huge 200kWh battery, providing a range of up to 620 miles. This is over 100 miles more than what’s currently possible in the world’s longest-range electric car, the Lucid Air. Of course, Tesla has retracted many statements in the past, so it’s quite possible that the Roadster won’t be able to go as far (or as fast) as initially claimed when it finally hits production.

As mentioned, the full production-spec Tesla Roadster is now confirmed to be revealed by the end of 2024, with Musk slating first deliveries for early next year. It costs £38,000 to reserve the base version of the new Roadster, which is likely to start from around £150,000 when it debuts. Tesla is also producing 1,000 Founders Series versions of the electric supercar, which requires a £189,000 reservation to secure. However, the final price tag for this model has to be disclosed.

When it finally arrives, the Tesla Roadster will join a growing pool of four-seater electric sports cars, which now includes the Porsche Taycan and Audi e-tron GT, as well as the forthcoming Lotus Eletre, Polestar 5 and Mercedes-AMG EQ.
