The all-electric Ford Explorer is an impressive family SUV that offers some clever practical touches and low running costs

New Ford Explorer - front tracking
  • Good range
  • Impressive standard kit
  • Efficient

If you’re in search of a practical, all-electric family SUV that’s efficient and offers impressively low running costs, then the new Ford Explorer could be well worth a look. It gets a lot of the basics right, which means you’ll benefit from a solid range, plenty of interior space and fast-charging capability to help keep you on the move on longer journeys.

This three-year PCH (Personal Contract Hire) deal from Motorlet Leasing through our parent site Carwow, helps to keep purchase costs down, too. You’ll need to provide an initial payment of £3,868.54, followed by monthly instalments of £299.48, while there’s a 5,000-mile annual limit.

Although available in entry-level Select specification, this particular model still comes with a generous level of standard equipment, including 19-inch alloys, LED headlights, rear privacy glass, front and rear parking sensors, keyless entry and start, adaptive cruise control, heated front seats, wireless smartphone charging, and a 14.6-inch infotainment touchscreen with integrated navigation. There’s a host of active safety systems, too, including lane-departure warning, cross-traffic alert, and traffic-sign recognition.

Inside the cabin you’ll find plenty of clever storage solutions, with the central ‘Megaconsole’ (between the front seats) and a compartment positioned behind the touchscreen being useful additions. Admittedly, the Explorer’s boot isn’t as big as in some rivals (e.g. the VW ID.4 and Skoda Enyaq), but it does offer practical details such as a pair of bag hooks, a 12V socket and a moveable floor.

With its 77kWh battery and single electric motor, this rear-wheel-drive model delivers 282bhp and manages the 0-62mph benchmark in 6.4 seconds, while the claimed maximum range is 374 miles across a mixture of roads. During our own test of an Extended Range Premium car we saw impressive overall efficiency of 3.7 miles per kWh - which equates to around 285 miles in real-world driving.
