Twin test: MG4 EV vs Kia Niro EV

Two of this year’s stand-out electric cars go head-to-head as we pit MG’s cut-price hatchback against the e-Niro’s successor

This time last year we had never heard of the MG4 EV. But it went from teaser images to being one of the most talked about electric cars on sale in just a few short months, and for very good reason. Not only is it MG’s first bespoke EV, based on a brand-new platform, it goes up against the likes of the Volkswagen ID.3, Cupra Born and Renault Megane E-TECH, all while starting from less than £26,000 – about 10 grand less than the starting price of those rivals we just listed.

The Kia e-Niro on the other hand was one of our favourite great-value electric family cars for many years, and now it’s been replaced by the all-new Kia Niro EV. Kia’s new entry-level electric car sticks with the e-Niro’s tried and tested formula, but adds a new sense of flair, better technology and even more practicality into the equation.

Kia Niro EV

Pros: Looks, efficiency, dual-screen infotainment

Cons: Rapid charging speeds, road noise, range and performance unchanged

MG4 EV

Pros: Price, surprisingly spacious, fun to drive

Cons: Interior quality, hit-and-miss infotainment, boot space
