Audi A3 hybrid boot space & seating

As a five-door 'Sportback' hatchback, the A3 TFSI e is a pretty practical choice, but it does lose some boot space compared to the non-plug-in version

While the Audi A3 is a reasonably spacious car, it's fair to say that the target customer is not necessarily a family of four, with younger professionals and couples seen as more likely buyers. For that reason, it's not quite as practical as its stablemates the Volkswagen Golf GTE, SEAT Leon e-Hybrid and Skoda Octavia iV – the latter two of which are also available as estates.

Audi A3 hybrid interior space, storage & comfort

This generation of A3 is slightly longer and wider than its predecessor, which means increased head and legroom for occupants inside. Four adult passengers can sit in complete comfort, but the rear middle seat is best used for shorter journeys only.

Boot space

This is where choosing a plug-in rather than a purely petrol or diesel A3 makes a difference. While there's no change to passenger space, the boot capacity does shrink from 380 to 280 litres in order to accommodate the batteries.

That's a supermini-sized boot in what's supposed to be a family hatchback, so those in the habit of carrying a lot of luggage will be better off with the closely related Skoda Octavia iV, which can fit 450 litres. The A3's main non-VW Group rival, the Mercedes A-Class hybrid, has a 310-litre boot.
