The iX is BMW’s flagship electric SUV, and it’s built on a platform that’s dedicated to electric cars and packed with technology. BMW owner satisfaction as reported in the most recent Driver Power survey may not reach the highs you’d expect for a premium German marque, but the iX is a strong performer when it comes to safety.

BMW iX reliability & problems

The iX is yet to appear in our Driver Power customer satisfaction survey, but the premium German brand isn’t exactly flying high when it comes to the best manufacturer rankings. Placing 21st out of 32 brands, it would appear that the tables have turned for the big executive car brands. Both Alfa Romeo and Jaguar outshone BMW by quite some distance, yet Mercedes and Audi ranked even lower.

Safety

The iX passed its Euro NCAP crash tests with flying colours, garnering the maximum overall score of five stars, along with impressive individual ratings of 91 and 87% for adult and child occupant protection respectively. Protection of pedestrians and cyclists was rated at 73%, while the car's safety assist systems were rated at 81%.

The Tesla Model X rival comes with a wealth of safety systems as standard, including BMW’s Driving Assistant Professional, which includes lane-keeping assistance, cross-traffic warning and adaptive cruise control with stop and go, among other features. It also gets a rear-view camera and automatic parking as part of the ‘Parking Assist’ pack. Additional safety features are also available as part of the optional Visibility and Technology Plus packs, but these come as standard on the top-of-the-range M60 model.

Hello, I’m Shane and I’m the senior content editor both here at DrivingElectric and at our sister title Auto Express. Although I can trace my professional roots back to the radio and podcasting world, my passion (or borderline obsession) with cars saw me switch over to motoring journalism in 2021. From the very start I have been fortunate enough to try out the latest and greatest electric cars on the market, and I’m proud to help people like you make the right EV buying decisions.
