New Honda 0 Series saloon and SUV finally uncloak brand’s EV masterplan
Honda has been slow on the electric car uptake but hopes to finally make a big impact with its new 0 Series models.
Honda has unveiled its future in Las Vegas at CES 2025. The Japanese manufacturer has revealed two prototypes: the Honda 0 Saloon, and the Honda 0 SUV. Not content with two new cars, it’s also lifted the lid on a new operating system, ASIMO OS, which will appear on the brand’s EVs.
The 0 Saloon is a continuation of the concept Honda took to CES 2024, though now much closer to production. It’ll be the flagship of the 0 Series cars, featuring freshly developed EV architecture, next gen technology and will, says Honda, embody a development approach called ‘Thin, Light and Wise’. Honda says it’ll come with level three autonomous driving technology, and, thanks to its new ASIMO OS software, can offer ‘a mobility experience customised for each individual user’.
Looks-wise, the prototype keeps much of what made Honda’s 2024 concept a showstopper. It’s long, low, wide, and looks like a car from the future rather than something that’ll be available from 2026.
The Honda 0 SUV will, however, be the first Honda 0 Series model available, again in 2026. Like the 0 Saloon it uses the ‘Thin, Light and Wise’ development approach to maximise interior space and visibility. Honda says it features 3D gyroscopic sensors developed to aid its robotics programs to help with ‘high-precision attitude estimation and stabilisation control’. Depending on how you read that, it’ll either be used in advanced stability control systems, or some sort of rudimentary flight. Most likely the former.
When the 0 Series releases, it’ll come with ASIMO OS. You may recognise the ASIMO name - it was the name given to the happy little robot Honda revealed in the year 2000. For years, ASIMO was used to delight audiences all over the world, and to advance learning in the field of robotics. While ASIMO itself is no longer in development, Honda has been continuing its work in robotics, and related technology.
ASIMO OS will, says Honda, control ECUs for advanced driver assistance systems, infotainment, and automated driving tech. Over the air updates will keep ASIMO OS in the loop and able to do whatever Honda can make it do.
The 0 Series cars will also benefit from automated driving tech (where legal). Level 3 autonomous tech will feature on the car, letting drivers take their eyes off the road in certain situations so the vehicle can take over. Honda’s used AI learning combined with behaviour models of experienced drivers to teach it to be a better, smarter driver - the idea being to have the car’s brain aid drivers in avoiding accidents. As more tech becomes available, or legal Honda can update the car remotely.
