Electric Jeep range to span four models by 2025
All-new Jeep Avenger EV, Recon 4x4 and Wagoneer S flagship will eventually be joined by electric Compass. Jeep Renegade EV is possible, too
Jeep is on a mission to electrify its entire line-up, with the 4x4 maker planning to launch four new electric cars by 2025.
Jeep’s first-ever EV – the compact Avenger SUV – arrives in early 2023, before an all-new, pure-electric version of its flagship Wagoneer SUV lands in Europe the following year. The future BMW iX competitor is currently code-named the Wagoneer S and has a target range of 400 miles. Jeep says it will also be capable of 0-60mph in around 3.5 seconds and produce over 590bhp.
Next up is the Recon 4x4 (below), which is set to enter production in North America in 2024, but won’t be coming to the UK until 2025. The Recon will be offered exclusively with electric power and has been fitted with Jeep’s Selec-Terrain traction management system, under-body protection, tow hooks and aggressive off-road tires to handle the kind of terrain the maker is famous for.
Designed as an all-electric alternative to the brand’s iconic Wrangler 4x4, the Recon has a boxier, more utilitarian design compared to the Avenger, and appears to have been heavily influenced by the wildly popular Ford Bronco. Like the Bronco, the Recon has removable doors and windows, and features a retractable roof. The wheels have also been pushed to the far corners of the car to improve the approach, departure and breakover angles for the zero-emissions off-roader.
While the Avenger sits on a new version of the e-CMP platform used for the Peugeot e-2008 and Vauxhall Mokka-e, the Recon and electric Wagoneer will be based on the new STLA Large platform. The EV-dedicated platform can accommodate dual-motor setups for all-wheel drive, as well as batteries of 100kWh or more.
An all-electric replacement for the outgoing Jeep Compass is expected to be the fourth EV the US brand will launch by 2025. The Compass EV will use a different platform called STLA Medium platform, but it still allows for ranges of over 400 miles and four-wheel drive. The next-generation Compass is also expected to grow in size to become the full-size family electric SUV within Jeep’s line-up.
It’s possible that the Jeep Renegade – the brand’s best-selling car in Europe – may also live on thanks to electric power, growing in size to sit above the new Avenger. A new zero-emissions version of the Renegade wouldn’t arrive until 2026 at the earliest, however, as that’s when the STLA Small platform is set to launch. This platform can accommodate four-wheel drive, allowing the new Renegade to retain the existing car’s off-road prowess.
