Vauxhall Grandland Hybrid range, MPG, CO2 & charging

As with all plug-ins, how efficient the Vauxhall Grandland Hybrid is depends on how much you use the electric motor versus the petrol engine

Vauxhall claims the Grandland Hybrid will return as much as 192mpg fuel economy, but as with any plug-in hybrid (PHEV), how economical it is depends on your usage patterns. Plug it in regularly and cover only short journeys to and from the office or shops, and your average consumption could even better those official figures. Run it on longer trips, however, and you’ll end up relying heavily on the petrol engine, with a resulting detrimental effect on your average fuel economy.

In official tests, the Grandland X is capable of travelling 34 miles on electric power. In the winter months, this is likely to be far lower, however. Our test on a wet and windy UK day showed around 22 miles with a full battery – although warmer weather will likely see this jump considerably. Once the batteries have been depleted, the Grandland offers the ability to top them back up using the petrol engine – but doing so will see your average fuel economy dip to around 30mpg.

Unless you have no access to a plug (if this is the case, a plug-in hybrid probably isn’t for you) or need a degree of zero-emissions range for later use, you should avoid using this function. Regularly driving a plug-in hybrid like this isn’t what's intended, of course. Plug the car in each evening or when you stop at the supermarket and you could save thousands on fuel costs.

Charge time

The Vauxhall Grandland Hybrid isn't available with fast or rapid charging technology. As standard, the SUV comes with a 3.7kW on-board charger, while a 7.4kW version is available as an option. Using the latter, Vauxhall says the Grandland will charge in “less than two hours” from a home wallbox of the same speed.
