Passenger space is strong, as the XC90 was designed with a plug-in hybrid version in mind. Boot space is a little less than you get in the standard versions, but the Recharge is still one of the most practical plug-in hybrids you can buy and will be a fantastic family car.

The middle row of seats is very roomy and comfortable, and the two outer seats slide independently, and while the sixth and seventh are a little tighter and will be better suited to children or shorter adults, they're still a boon for anyone wanting to ferry the kids and the grandparents around at weekends.

Volvo XC90 Recharge T8 hybrid interior space, storage & comfort

Leg and headroom are both good in the second row, and even shorter adults sat in the fold-up third-row seats will be comfortable for short journeys – the air vents and cupholders back here help, as well.

Accessing the third-row seats is done by pulling a lever to slide and tilt the second row, and while you need to be flexible to duck through the gap, it's not bad by seven-seat SUV standards. Those in the second row get loads of space and comfort, while the driver and front passenger feel properly cosseted.

The dashboard is high, but the centre console is relatively low, plus there’s good storage including a big tray behind the gearlever, while the door bins are big and the glovebox and central area between the front seats mean there’s plenty of space to store possessions. The seats are also supportive and have a broad range of adjustment, so you’ll feel fresh even after a long journey.

Boot space

There’s decent room inside, as the plug-in XC90’s battery is stored in the spine of the car, where the driveshaft that supplies the rear wheels with power goes in a regular four-wheel-drive model.

However, the boot space is smaller than in the petrol and diesel models due to the rear-mounted electric motor and its associated electronics. As a result, with all seven seats in place there’s 262 litres compared to 397 litres in a petrol or diesel XC90, while this rises to 640 litres in the T8 if you fold the third row of seats down, which disappear easily into the boot floor.

By any standards, the XC90 Recharge T8 has a versatile, practical and comfortable interior that'll make light work of the most demanding family-motoring lifestyle.
