BMW X5 hybrid reliability & safety rating
The BMW X5 hybrid has a strong crash safety rating, but long-term reliability is less certain
Euro NCAP | Adult protection | Child protection | Safety assist |

Large SUVs like the X5 hybrid are often bought with safety in mind, and the X5 doesn't disappoint, with a reassuring five-star seal of approval from the independent experts at Euro NCAP. Reliability is less certain, with plenty of complex electronics to go wrong and BMW having a less-than-stellar record in customer surveys.
BMW X5 hybrid reliability & problems
The latest X5 hybrid only went on sale in late 2019, so there's not yet any long-term reliability data for this specific model. But BMW's record as a brand in customer-satisfaction surveys isn't brilliant: it finished 21st out of 29 manufacturers in the 2021 Driver Power survey published by our sister title Auto Express.
Safety
The X5 is a very safe car, confirmed by independent Euro NCAP crash-testing in 2018. The safety organisation awarded the big BMW five out of five stars overall, with individual scores of 89% for adult occupant protection, 86% for child occupant protection and 75% for safety assistance.
