Top 10 cheapest electric cars to insure 2025

Looking at insurance for electric cars? These models should offer the cheapest possible premiums

Car insurance is a legal requirement for all drivers, no matter who you are or what car you own. It’s often one of the most significant expenses when buying a new vehicle. For those switching from combustion engines to electric cars, understanding which models are the most affordable to insure can save you money. But which are the cheapest electric cars to insure?

When exploring electric cars, it’s helpful to understand insurance groups. UK cars are assigned to groups ranging from 1 to 50, with lower numbers representing the cheapest cars to insure. These groupings are based on factors like repair costs, original price, and performance, meaning faster and more expensive models are typically in the higher brackets.

For instance, vehicles like the Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model 3 occupy some of the most expensive groups, while more modest options fall lower on the scale. At the affordable end, you’ll find a wide range of models, from a sporty Abarth to a sleek Alfa Romeo SUV. The key to finding the cheapest electric cars to insure is thorough research before committing to a purchase. To help, we’ve compiled a handy guide to some of the most budget-friendly EVs for insurance.

The cheapest electric cars to insure

We have compared all the EVs on the market to bring you a list of the cheapest electric cars to insure that are currently available in the UK. If the overall cost price of buying a new EV is more important to you, then take a look at our list of the top 10 cheapest electric cars.

Fiat’s electric 500 is perhaps the ideal city car if you can live with its cramped back seats. It’s stylish and easy to drive, and models with the larger battery offer close to 200 miles of range – perfect if you primarily nip around town but have the occasional longer journey, too. The well-specified La Prima trim sits in group 18, while the cheaper entry-level spec with the smaller 25kWh battery occupies group 16.

2. Mazda MX-30

  • Model: MX-30 Prime 35.5kWh
  • Insurance group: 19
  • Prices from £27,995

Mazda often does things a little differently to other manufacturers, and its MX-30 EV is a prime example of that. Rather than prioritising range, Mazda deliberately chose a compact battery to keep costs and weight down. The resulting 124-mile range looks low but is perfectly fine for customers, according to Mazda’s research. An upside to the small battery is that the quirky MX-30 is one of the cheapest new electric cars, while insurance is relatively cheap too. All versions sit in group 19 out of 50.

The MINI Cooper E Classic gives you all the thrills of MINI ownership, now in electric form. With 181bhp, it’s quick off the mark, hitting 0-62mph in 7.3 seconds. Its group 20 insurance rating keeps the cost of ownership in check, but if you're after more performance, the SE ups it to 215bhp and drops the 0-62mph time to 6.7 seconds – the insurance jumps to group 26, though. The Cooper E Classic brings MINI’s signature agility and compact size, but without the steep insurance premiums usually found in performance-oriented cars.

4. MINI Aceman

  • Model: E Classic 38.5kWh
  • Insurance group: 20
  • Prices from £31,800

The new MINI Aceman sits between the Cooper and Countryman in the MINI range, bringing a compact SUV feel with MINI's usual go-kart handling. The E Classic version offers 181bhp, hitting 0-62mph in 7.3 seconds, with a sensible group 20 insurance rating. The SE version ramps up power to 215bhp and lowers the 0-62mph time to 6.7 seconds, but expect a bump to group 26 for insurance. While it sits in the SUV category, it delivers MINI’s sharp, responsive handling, making it one of the more engaging small EVs available – especially for those looking to keep costs reasonable.

Even with the seats up, you’ve got 597 litres of usable space. On the road, it’s quiet and comfortable, even at motorway speeds. The compact size and well-tuned suspension make it a joy through corners, offering a large amount of grip in most situations, but if you are too heavy with the accelerator, you may find yourself losing traction.

The Abarth produces 155bhp and 235Nm of torque and accelerates from 0-62mph in 7 seconds, offering more than enough punch. The compact size and well-tuned suspension make it a joy through corners. In insurance group 23, it makes insurance manageable for EV enthusiasts looking for a little more flair, without the hefty insurance costs of some rivals.

Far from being a box-ticking exercise, the Junior has been thoughtfully engineered, with careful tuning of key components like the brakes and steering to deliver a genuinely enjoyable driving experience. Are electric cars cheaper to insure?

While driving an electric car may offer you plenty of savings on traditional fossil fuels and currently on VED (road tax) costs, insurance costs are an area that tend to be a bit more pricey than their combustion counterparts. This is due to the combination of the vehicle's original value being typically more than normal cars, and the potential risk of expensive repair costs in the event of an accident being deemed to be higher. This then causes insurers to push EVs into higher insurance groups which increases the cost.

That doesn’t necessarily mean electric cars are incredibly expensive to insure; our list of electric cars should offer reasonable insurance premiums. However, if you want more comprehensive information, feel free to read our full guides on electric car running costs and electric car insurance here.

How much does electric car insurance cost?

Realistically it’s impossible to say how much it would cost for you to insure an electric car. Insurance costs vary based on many different factors, such as where you live, your driving history, your job and which car you choose. It’s always best to get insurance quotes for the car you’re planning to buy before you commit.
