New electric MG Cyberster roadster could be on your driveway this summer for under £55k

The MG Cyberster is finally on sale with up to 501bhp, scissor doors and a £55k starting price

It feels like an eternity since the original MG Cyberster concept first took our breath away at the 2021 Shanghai Motor Show. Now, the long-awaited MG Cyberster electric sports car is finally on sale, with first UK deliveries expected to land in August.

The complete specs of the MG were revealed at this year's Geneva Motor Show but the price was kept hidden. However, the brand has finally opened the official order books for the Cyberster, revealing that the entry-level ‘Trophy’ starts from £54,995 and the pinnacle of the range, the ‘GT’, has been given a price of £59,995.

Both versions share many key features such as show-stopping Lamborghini-esque scissor doors and a red or black folding fabric roof - which can be operated while on the move at up to 30mph. Both will also be offered with 5 different paint colours; these are called Dynamic Red (the launch colour), New English White, Camden Grey, Cosmic Silver, and a premium option MG has named Inca Yellow. However, beyond that, the Trophy and GT versions of the Cyberster will have different levels of specification and power.

The MG Trophy will get 19-inch alloy wheels and LED lights as standard while maintaining the same exterior design as the GT. Under the surface, it will be powered by a 77kWh battery, which is said to be able to achieve 316 miles on a charge under the WLTP tests. A single motor will drive the rear wheels, producing 335bhp and 475Nm of torque, which should achieve a quoted top speed of 121mph and 0-62mph in a respectable 5 seconds.

However, if you are wanting a car with a bit more fire under the bonnet, then the GT is your answer. 20-inch wheels with performance Pirelli P Zero tyres are standard - all four of those wheels being driven by a dual-motor electric drive system that is good for a quoted 501bhp and 725Nm of torque. It’s capable of rocketing you from 0 to 62mph in as little as 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 124mph.

With all that extra power, MG says that the Cyberster GT is the “fastest accelerating and most powerful production car to have worn the iconic MG badge”. This car is not the one to go for if you want efficiency; the range tops out at 276 miles (WLTP), so if that is your main focus, stick to the Trophy.

Performance isn’t the only thing that the Cyberster gives you - thanks to the MG Pilot’ safety system you get many features designed to keep both the driver and pedestrians safe. These include lane change and lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection, active emergency braking with pedestrian and bicycle detection, traffic jam assist, intelligent speed assist, and adaptive headlights.

Inside the cabin of both the GT and the Trophy, you will find a curved layout on the dashboard - a 10.25-inch central display partnered by two 7-inch displays showing all the driver information. A screen is mounted to the main centre console controlling the dual-zone climate control. Both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity are standard, along with many other features such as a Bose sound system, ambient lighting, and a 360-degree parking camera.

The seats are made from a faux-leather material and can be specified in either black with red accents or grey with white accents. The car is not blessed with much storage as the boot only offers a small 249-litre capacity and inside the cabin you have an additional compartment in the armrest.

MG states that when plugged into a 150kW DC charger the Cyberster can charge from 10-80 per-cent in as little as 38 minutes. The brand has also installed a brake energy regeneration system with 3 settings. Starting from £54,995, the MG Cyberster’s closest rival will be from the electric Porsche Boxster, which is due to arrive next year.
