Audi A6 hybrid running costs, insurance, warranty & tax
The Audi A6 TFSI e makes most sense as a company car – the running-costs savings elsewhere are less impressive
Insurance group | Warranty | Service interval | Annual company-car tax cost (20%/40%) |
---|---|---|---|
40-45 | 3yrs/60,000 miles | 1yr/12,000 miles | From £868/£1,736 |
As with so many plug-in hybrids, company-car users benefit most from the drivetrain in the A6 TFSI e. Its low CO2 emissions mean a Benefit-in-Kind rating of 12% regardless of which model you pick, with entry-level Sport cars offering the best bang for your buck. However, there's a catch if you're a private buyer: high insurance, big servicing bills and the aforementioned fuel-economy dilemma mean many in this category may be better off with a diesel A6 instead. Still, the plug-in A6 knows its target market and plays to that.
Audi A6 hybrid insurance group
The A6 TFSI e occupies insurance group 40 to 45 out of 50 depending on how it has been specced, which is higher than the group 40 rating for the sportier, faster Audi S6. It's safe to assume that as a private owner you'll have to stump up a considerable amount for your premium – this is due largely to the increased cost of potential repairs to the car's battery and electric motor.
Warranty
Audi offers a three-year warranty with unlimited mileage in the first two years, but a 60,000-mile cap in year three – much the same as you get with a Mercedes. The hybrid system's battery is covered by an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty. For context, the BMW 530e gets an unlimited-mileage three-year warranty, but only six years and 60,000 miles of battery cover.
Servicing
Audi offers fixed-price servicing options that can help spread the cost of maintenance during ownership. As of late 2020, according to Audi's website, a two-service plan will cost £529 for the A6 TFSI e, or a few pence over £22 a month.
Road tax
There's no road tax to pay in the first year, but you're unlikely to notice, as this amount is usually rolled into a car's on-the-road price. The A6's list price starts at over £40,000 and so owners have to make an extra payment in years two to six of ownership of £335 per annum, on top of the standard alternative-fuel flat rate of £145 a year. That means you'll pay a total of £480 a year over that period.
