Renault Clio E-TECH Hybrid running costs, insurance, warranty & tax

Good fuel economy, a reasonable insurance rating and manageable company-car tax rates all count in the Clio hybrid's favour here

While the Clio hybrid won't be as cheap to run as some plug-in hybrid hatchbacks and SUVs from the class above, it is of course cheaper for private buyers to purchase in the first place, and its decent fuel-economy figures for non-plug-in hybrid will appeal to those in search of efficiency who perhaps don't have the off-road parking that's necessary to plug a car in at home.

Renault Clio E-TECH Hybrid insurance group

Like its petrol-engined counterparts, the Clio hybrid should be a fairly cheap car to insure, falling as it does into group 18 regardless of what trim level you pick. That compares to groups 19 and 20 for the Honda Jazz and groups 13 and 14 for the Toyota Yaris Hybrid.

Warranty

In late 2019, Renault boosted the duration of its warranty coverage in the UK from three to five years, upping the mileage limit to 100,000 in the process. That compares well to Hyundai's five-year, unlimited-mileage guarantee, as well as Kia's seven-year/100,000-mile cover. The Toyota Yaris, a key rival to the Clio, also gets five-year/100,000-mile manufacturer cover.

Servicing

The Clio E-TECH needs attention at the dealership either once a year or every 18,000 miles, whichever comes sooner.

Road tax

Road tax (VED) for the Clio E-TECH is the same as for any hybrid in the UK right now: £155, representing a £10 discount on the standard annual rate for petrol and diesel-engined passenger cars. As no Clio hybrid gets anywhere near a list price of £40,000, there's no need to worry about the £355 road-tax premium paid by drivers of more expensive models, hybrid or otherwise.
