Volkswagen Golf GTE boot space & seating
Well packaged and with plenty of interior space, the VW Golf GTE isn't much less practical than the non-hybrid version
Length | Width | Height | Boot volume (seats up/down) |

Hatchbacks are all about practicality and flexibility, so Volkswagen has put in a lot of effort to ensure the Golf can keep pace with the competition in this area. The latest Mk8 incarnation is a spacious car that's longer than the model it replaced, with improvements in interior packaging and space for occupants.
However, the GTE version's battery is mounted under the boot floor, as is the case with many plug-in hybrids, and there's a trade-off in boot space as a result. The Golf gets a few clever features that help to enhance its practicality, however: shopping-bag hooks in the boot, a ski hatch and a dual-level boot floor all provide an extra degree of usefulness.
Volkswagen Golf GTE interior space, storage & comfort
There's plenty of space for front-seat passengers to get comfortable, with a good centre armrest, a large central space for phones and two generously-sized cupholders falling easily within reach. The GTE's standard sports seats are good, too, with lots of lateral support plus height-adjustment and lumbar support. There's plenty of space in the back for two adults, with decent knee and headroom. To us, the closely related SEAT Leon e-Hybrid and Skoda Octavia iV feel a little more spacious in the back, but not by much.
Boot space
There's 273 litres of boot space in the back of the GTE – down considerably on the standard car's 381 litres. It's a common price to pay on plug-in hybrids, as space has to be made for the battery. For comparison's sake, the Mercedes A 250 e has 310 litres of space, versus 370 in its non-electrified equivalent.
