New Smart Concept #5 previews the biggest, ‘most versatile’ Smart yet
The Smart Concept #5 is the “most versatile Smart of all time”, but just how much of the concept will make it to production?
Smart was once known for its small city runarounds but the Smart Concept #5 is a sizable, tough-looking SUV and it’s just been revealed at the 2024 Beijing Motor Show. The brand is looking to enter the premium mid-size SUV segment, calling the #5 the “most spacious and versatile” smart to date.
Smart is clearly looking to conquer more than the urban city streets. From a design perspective, the #5 looks to have taken inspiration from other SUVs like the Mercedes EQB and Land Rover Defender, while encompassing the softer design and smooth curves seen on the #1 and #3.
Equipped for rugged off-road terrain, the Smart #5 Concept has short front and rear overhangs, pronounced wheelarches, chunky protective cladding, off-road tyres and all-wheel drive. Delving into the accessories box, the #5 also features a hidden integrated winch, as well as a hidden rear step for easier roof rack access. Expect to see these off-road flavour features watered down or offered as optional extras when the car finally makes it to production.
While the exterior is geared up for an all-terrain attack, the interior is much more sedate and with a focus on maximum space and passenger comfort. At the heart of the dashboard sit two embedded OLED screens powered by a “high-performance AMD V2000 chip”. Smart claims this system will provide “optimal access to the vehicle’s numerous features”, but info on these functions isn’t yet available. Ambient lighting along with a portable speaker in the centre console also feature, while the seats offer heating, ventilation and massage functions. AI technology will be utilised, with a new virtual in-car assistant that can engage in “entertaining conversations”, according to Smart.
Smart describes the car as something which combines the “distinct modernity of Smart with the attitude and open mindedness to offer new perspectives and possibilities”. Dirk Adelmann, CEO of smart Europe GmbH, said: “For more than a quarter of a century, Smart has made a significant impact by pioneering models and mobility solutions for the urban space and beyond. The Smart Concept #5 is the most unexpected and versatile car that our brand has ever created. With this vehicle, we leave all boundaries behind and open up a new segment for customers in Europe and worldwide.”
The Smart #5 showcases the brand’s latest electric car technology beneath that rugged exterior. The 800v electrical system and a battery of over 100kWh in size is said to enable a range of 341 miles and charging from 10 to 80 per cent in around 15 minutes. Official figures have yet to be released, however.
Although the #5 is still a concept for now the production car will be along shortly. We expect to see it in the second half of 2024.
