Toyota Prius+ (2012-2020) running costs
The Toyota Prius+ can work out exceptionally cheap to run – as long as you drive it in the right way
Insurance group | Warranty | Service interval | 2020/21 company-car tax cost (20%/40%) |
---|---|---|---|
11-12 | 5yrs / unlimited miles | 1yr / 10,000 miles | From £1,603 / £3,206 |
The Toyota Prius+ costs around the £30,000 mark. Other non-hybrid seven-seat MPVs (such as the Peugeot 5008 and Volkswagen Touran) start at a fair bit less, but the Prius+ costs about the same as one of the range-topping models in their line-ups. And, when you bear in mind the amount of standard equipment you get on the Prius+, it’s not bad value.
Running costs vary slightly depending on which trim you choose. The entry-level Icon averages nearly 49mpg on paper, whereas the Excel has slightly larger alloy wheels, so economy drops to 47mpg. However, in everyday use, you’re highly unlikely to notice a big difference.
The entry-level Icon emits 132g/km of CO2, compared 135g/km for the Excel. However, neither figure is low enough to exempt the car from the London Congestion Charge.
Toyota Prius+ insurance group
The Icon or Excel versions of the Toyota Prius+ fall into insurance groups 11 and 12 respectively. That’s the same as the regular Prius hatchback, but better than some other non-hybrid seven-seat MPVs.
Warranty
A five-year/100,000-mile warranty comes as standard on the Toyota Prius+, which is one of the better warranties out there. Buy a Peugeot or Citroen, for example, and you’ll only have three years’ cover.
Servicing
The Toyota Prius+ service intervals are every 12 months or 10,000 miles – whichever is sooner. Three fixed-priced service options are available (Intermediate, Full and Full Plus) and can be booked online. Toyota’s genuine parts come with a 12-month warranty.
Road tax
Because the Prius+ is a hybrid, annual road tax from the second year onwards will cost £140, rather than the £150 charged for non-hybrid vehicles. And, with precious few options available, you won’t have to worry about taking the price you pay beyond £40,000 – which would add an extra £325 to your annual charge.
