The EX40 is first and foremost a compact family SUV, so there’s plenty of room inside and a decent-sized boot. This Volvo might not be as practical as the Skoda Enyaq or Hyundai Ioniq 5, but many will be able to live with that in order to enjoy this electric SUV’s handsome looks.

Volvo EX40 electric interior space, storage & comfort

Inside, the EX40 is much the same as the old XC40, with lots of rear headroom and legroom plus a good amount of storage. There’s a central cubby and a pair of cupholders, a spot for your phone under the main screen and deep door bins.

However, it can feel a little dark inside, as the rear windows are tinted and the rising window line at the back means not a huge amount of light gets in – only made worse on Core and Plus cars with their dark headlining. A panoramic sunroof is fitted on top-spec Ultra models which lets more light into the cabin – something unfortunately not available on lower-spec cars, even as an option.

Boot space

With 452 litres of boot space, the Volvo EX40 offers its fair share of luggage space. This capacity isn’t too far off the Kia Niro EV’s 475 litres, but it does fall short of the Audi Q4 e-tron’s 520 litres.

The EX40 also features some extra cargo space under the boot floor, as well as another area beneath the bonnet. The latter is only 31 litres, but it’s ideal for storing the charging cables, nonetheless.

Hello, I’m Shane and I’m the senior content editor both here at DrivingElectric and at our sister title Auto Express. Although I can trace my professional roots back to the radio and podcasting world, my passion (or borderline obsession) with cars saw me switch over to motoring journalism in 2021. From the very start I have been fortunate enough to try out the latest and greatest electric cars on the market, and I’m proud to help people like you make the right EV buying decisions.
