Ford has a good reputation for reliability, which means the Transit Custom hybrid should be a dependable companion

The current iteration of the Ford Transit Custom was awarded the full five stars in Euro NCAP crash-testing back in 2012, and has maintained that rating in reviews carried out in 2013, 2014 and 2019 (with the latter also looking at the crash performance of the hybrid).
Ford Transit Custom hybrid reliability & problems
Ford finished 24th in the 2020 Driver Power owner satisfaction survey, suggesting that there’s lots of room for improvement when it comes to keeping its customers happy. However, only 15.6% of those surveyed reported issues with their vehicles, compared to 20% of Volkswagen drivers and almost 19% of Renault respondents.
Having said that, the Transit has a long history of success in the UK; something it wouldn’t have achieved without solid reliability over the years. We’re not aware of any major recurring faults on the Transit Custom, and Ford believes the hybrid will prove even more reliable than petrol and diesel alternatives in the long run, reducing the total cost of ownership with lower servicing bills.
A three-year/100,000-mile warranty will protect you from any nasty surprises, while the battery is covered for up to eight years/100,000 miles: this means the savings from running on electric power are guaranteed for a long period of time.
Safety
Electric, power-assisted steering is standard on the Transit Custom, ensuring that it’s easy to manoeuvre around town. Parking and lane-keeping assistance systems are also available, helping to reduce the chance of bumps and scrapes, or worse.
Other technologies include Side Wind Stabilisation to help counter sudden crosswinds, as well as Curve Control, which can brake individual wheels to keep the van under control if a driver enters a corner too quickly. Load Adaptive Roll Stability Control helps deal with the effects of carrying a heavy payload, while the Pre-Collision Assist system can detect pedestrians stepping out into the road.
Front, side and curtain airbags are included, and a rear-view camera that projects a colour image into the rear-view mirror is also available.
