Picking the plug-in hybrid Renegade over its petrol e-Hybrid counterpart will almost always be a decision taken with running costs in mind. The 4xe should prove cheaper to run in all aspects apart from insurance. At the same time, company-car users benefit from favourable Benefit-in-Kind rates. Jeep also offers a competitive warranty (plus roadside assistance) and fixed-price servicing deals, so ownership should be a fairly painless experience.

Jeep Renegade 4xe plug-in hybrid insurance group

Entry-level Limited cars sit in insurance group 22, while Upland and Trailhawk trim with the more powerful engine is in group 25. This means the Renegade 4xe will cost a similar amount to insure as the Kia Niro PHEV, which occupies groups 14 and 15, depending on specification.

Warranty

As with all Jeep models, the Renegade has a three-year/60,000-mile warranty and three years' of roadside assistance. The Renegade's Kia Niro PHEV rival’s seven-year/100,000-mile warranty can't be beaten here, though.

Servicing

Servicing takes place annually or every 9,000 miles. A promotion is running at the time of writing (July/August 2023) for any new Jeep purchase to get the first three scheduled services for free as part of something called ‘Jeep Wave’.

Road tax

As a plug-in hybrid, the Renegade 4xe is free to tax in the first year because of its low CO2 emissions.

Be careful not to add many options to top-spec Trailhawk models because that will push the list price beyond £40,000 and land you with a £560 annual VED bill to pay between years two to six of ownership. Every other Renegade 4xe just pays the alternative fuel road tax (VED) rate (because it is a hybrid) of £170.
