Plug-in hybrid SUVs are chosen primarily for their low CO2 figures, strong fuel economy and pure-electric range. So it's good news that the Jeep Renegade 4xe delivers superior figures compared with the standard e-Hybrid model. Being four-wheel drive and having the aerodynamic properties of a brick means its official figures aren’t as good as rivals’, such as the more road-biased Kia Niro PHEV. All versions of Renegade 4xe have a claimed electric range of 30 miles, emissions of 41-46g/km of CO2 and fuel economy between 141.2-156.9mpg.

As is always the case with a plug-in hybrid, getting as close as possible to the official figures will depend heavily on judicious use of the accelerator pedal and a fully topped-up battery.

Jeep Renegade 4xe plug-in hybrid range, MPG & CO2 emissions

Emissions and economy sit between 41 and 46g/km of CO2 and 141.2 to 156.9mpg – a little behind the best of the Renegade's competition. The pure-electric range is a claimed to be between 28 and almost 30 miles, and the Renegade can travel at speeds of up to 81mph in electric mode before the engine needs to help out.

Charge time

Jeep claims a full charge using a 7.4kW wallbox will take less than two hours, while the same task using a 2.3kW three-pin plug will take five hours. Cheekily, Jeep doesn’t include a Type 2 cable with the Renegade 4xe, so you’ll need to ensure you get a wired wallbox installed. Otherwise, you’ll have to fork out £300 for the right cable.

The car also has regenerative braking, which has an 'Intense' mode; this maximises on-the-move charging and increases regeneration when you lift off the throttle.
