With a starting price of over £63,000, the S90 Recharge T8 isn’t cheap, especially compared rivals. BMW 530e prices start from under £52,000 and the entry-level Mercedes E-Class hybrid is even less. The Volvo does at least match those cars' low running costs, as it emits as little as 18g/km of CO2, attracting an very low Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) rate.

Fuel economy is quoted at a maximum of 353mpg, but in common with other plug-in hybrids, it can be hard to match this in real-world driving. In reality, you’re likely to see anything between 30 and 50mpg, depending on how you drive and if the S90's battery is fully charged, although the ability to cover over 50 miles in electric mode should lower fuel costs.

Volvo S90 Recharge T8 hybrid insurance group

All versions of the S90 Recharge T8 fall into insurance group 44. Volvo offers its own insurance cover, guaranteeing the use of genuine parts and repairs covered by a five-year warranty.

Warranty

The S90 Recharge T8 is covered by Volvo’s standard three-year/60,000-mile warranty, but this can be extended to four-year/60,000-mile or four-year/80,000-mile cover by paying extra. The battery in the T8 is covered by its own eight-year/100,000-mile warranty, with any defects fixed for free within that period.

Servicing

The S90 Recharge T8  requires a service every 12 months or 18,000 miles, whichever comes sooner.

Road tax

There’s no road tax (VED) to pay in year one, but the S90's 'alternatively fuelled vehicle' status and over-£40,000 list price equate to £510 a year in years two to six of ownership, dropping to £155 a year after that.
